Hi Everyone,
This week I wanted to talk about medication. Not whether or not you should take it because that is purely a personal decision, but how to educate yourself so you can make an informed decision. There are books out that have all kinds of medicines listed and there uses and side effects as well. I have found these to be helpful. The internet is also an excellent resource. There are many medical message boards and sites which might have some information you need. A great souce is always your doctor and pharmacist. You should ask any information about the medicine you need with your doctor and your pharmicist. Don't feel uncomfortable asking that is why they are there. You have a right to an informed decision. I would never put any medication in my body unless I fully understand the benefits and side effects first. We have to be our own advocates first and the patient secondly. Sometimes it is helpful to bring your questions written down to your appointment and a close family member or spouse with you so you don't forget to ask what you need to. Pain affects your ability to concentrate and it is easy to forget what you want to say. Some doctors always seem to be in a rush and that can be intimidating to some people. Just remember they get paid to help you and without patients they would have a real problem. If you run into a doctor who brushes your questions off then maybe they are not the right doctor for you. A good doctor would allow you to ask the questions you need to. I hope these ideas will help you to make an informed decision where your medications are concerned. If you would like to comment or add your own suggestions feel free to add them to this post.
Robyn I love you
