The Canadian RSD Network is delighted to announce that Mel Martin is the recent winner of the Access to Health award in the community agency category. The Health Literacy Network recognizes two individuals each year who have given extraordinary service to people with disabilities. Mr. Martin has lived with Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy for over 20 years and has worked tirelessly to promote an understanding of this disorder. In 1994, he organized an RSD support group on Vancouver Island and in 1996 founded the first RSD society/charity in Canada. Today, the Canadian RSD Network remains a strong voice for those with RSD and continues to provide education and support. Some of Mel's many other accomplishments include: organizing several conferences and bringing together RSD doctors from all over the world, having the province of British Columbia recognize July as RSD/CRPS Awareness Month, and managing an online support group for RSD patients. Mel has recently retired from the Canadian RSD Network board of directors after many years of dedicated service. Mr. Martin accepted an invitation to volunteer as the Executive Director and will continue his signature Panda Drive, collecting panda bears to donate to children in pain. The Canadian RSD Network board of directors would like to thank Mel Martin for his dedication and hard work. Congratulations to a pioneer and one of the very few advocates for RSD/CRPS in Canada!
