PORTLAND, Ore. (Ivanhoe Newswire) -- As the population ages, more and more of us are becoming caregivers to loved ones. But it can be overwhelming for the patient and family trying to manage all the medications. In fact, 50 percent of meds are taken incorrectly. Here's one solution that puts pills in their place.

"My mother-in-law, who was a very young 75-year-old, got breast cancer and acute leukemia," says Mary Schutten. "It was already stressful enough getting her diagnosis, and when they threw 22 meds at us to manage I just thought how are we going to do that?"

So Schutten went in search of a solution. Finding nothing, she created a new product and a new business.

Simple in design, IdentiMed is a patented plastic organizer with see-through pockets for drug samples. She says, "I manufactured 1,000 and sold those very quickly and then thought, 'Gee, maybe we're not alone,' and we weren't."

Robert Freedman battles multiple illnesses. He juggles about 15 medications, and that had his daughters worried. So they organized the meds in this notebook. It's a complete and visual journal of each drug's name and strength, schedule and purpose.

"It's a lot easier for communicating with the doctor and putting it all together," says Pamela Freedman. Robert says: "I take it everywhere I go now. It goes in my briefcase, in to the car, with me whenever I leave the house."

So far Schutten has sold about 10,000 pill pages to hospitals and clinics. Proving, sometimes helping yourself can help more people than you'd imagine. She says helping empower patients with knowledge is her passion. Her pill pages are even being translated into Spanish and Russian.

Here is the webpage where Mary has her products displayed.

Remember, if you mention you are with American RSDHope when you buy the Pill pages, forms, etc., Mary said they will tuck little something extra in. What it is I have no idea but she went to our website and read about RSD after getting my original email and the first few orders and was drawn to our cause and wanted to help in some way.
